A relaxing time around The Bay (Glenelg)

The last few days of our holiday have been spent relaxing in Glenelg.  This is known by the locals as The Bay.

The following are a few images of an area that we have thoroughly enjoyed staying in rather than in the city: -

A replica of the Buffalo.  The original brought settlers to South Australia. Our friend Jan can trace her heritage back to the original Buffalo arriving in Glenelg.  The replica is open for meals and you can then tour around the ship.  We took our friends for a meal here on our last evening in Australia.

Outback Jacks on the marina has a challenge for any customer brave enough to take this on.  You get 30 minutes to eat a 1Kg steak plus wedges and veggies.  To qualify to get this for half price and get the Outback Jacks T shirt and your picture in the hall of fame you have to eat all that's served on your plate.  If you fail you have to pay the full price of $39.95 for the meal.

Nathan, who is in our party blog, has succesfully completed this challenge.

This is what you would be served if you took the challenge.  A gong is sounded so all in the restaurant know that someone is taking the challenge.  Would you be up for it?

The fastest that this challenge has been completed in is 11 minutes and 5 seconds.  The youngest person to complete the challenge was just 12 years old!

I decided not to attempt the challenge.  My meal, which is a generous serve, looks like an entree in comparison to Outback Jacks challenge!  Vegetarian dishes are also available at Outback Jacks.

Around Adelaide Central Market

Shopping at Adelaide Central Market is a pleasant experience.  You can find everything there from Apples to Zucchini!

These are just a few images to give you a flavour of the market: -

The best way to finish off the shopping is with a cold one in the Central Market bar!!

Trip out to Hahndorf

Hahndorf is in the Adelaide Hills and was originally settled by Prussians.  A trip out by bus is very inexpensive.

This is just a selection of images taken here: -

In the bus on the way back from Hahndorf there was a loud bang!  A tyre had a blown out round a roundabout. A replacement bus had to be called out.

Punctured tyre on the Hahndorf bus.

Closer to Adelaide

Today we have decided to go to Wilmington for no other reason than we live near to Wilmington in the UK.

When we stop for coffee the owner of the store at Wilmington has the day off and is being served breakfast as it is his Birthday.  He plans to 'blow the froth off a few' later at his local.

We get chatting and tell him about Wilmington UK and 'the long man' cut into the side of the downs. We give him a card detailing our website where he will be able to view an image of the Long Man.

After leaving Wilmington we spend the day bushwalking in Mount Remarkable National Park.  We only took our film cameras with us and so cannot upload any images to the blog.  If you're bushwalking at this time of the year it is imperative that you carry plenty of water with you. It is also 'Fire Danger Season' so you need to follow the rules and remain vigilant.

After bushwalking at Mount Remarkable we move on to Melrose, the oldest settled town in the Flinders.

Melrose

After staying the night at Melrose we move on to Clare, stopping off at Laura on the way through for an ice cream.

View of Laura

The ice cream parlour is not as we remembered it from our visit in 1998 with the Wayward Bus and we get talking with the owners.  Small world as they know Tomo who had such an influence on the journies that we make into the outback of Australia which we love. We leave him a note in her visitors book as he probably has no idea of the influence he had on us all those years back!

We move onto Clare for the night as that is only a short hop away from Adelaide where we have to return the Troupie the following day.
